Dental Implant Placement Process

A representation of dental implants in a patient's mouth in Tigard, ORTooth loss is a serious issue that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. At Richard Whipple, DDS, we can replace your missing teeth with dental implants. With this treatment, we place small titanium posts in your jaw to support your restoration. Implants provide many incredible benefits over traditional bridges and dentures, including greater comfort and protecting the health of your jawbone. The process, however, is a bit more involved. Here is what you can expect during implant placement.

Your Initial Consultation

Before the placement of dental implants, we first perform a consultation to determine if treatment is the right solution for your needs. This consultation involves a thorough oral exam and a discussion of your medical history. In addition to looking over your mouth, we also take digital images of your mouth. If we determine implants are the right treatment, we then begin the planning phase and schedule you for surgery.

3D Scanning and Planning Your Treatment

To create a customized treatment plan, we take a 3D CT scan of your mouth. This scan allows us to see all anatomical structures of your mouth, including the jawbone, the roots of remaining teeth, sinus and nasal cavities, and your nerve passageways. It takes less than a minute to capture the image, which is done using a cone-shaped X-ray beam. The image produced is displayed in 3D on a computer monitor. Specialized software is then used to manipulate the image so that we can get a complete look at your mouth from multiple angles. The image can be rotated in some different ways. We can zoom in and enhance specific areas for a closer look. We are also able to visualize placement of your final restorations.

Placing Your Implants with NobelGuide

The software also provides us with the ability to create customized surgical guides. The guide provides us with the ability to place your implants and your restorations with incredible precision. Your surgery is done under a local anesthetic. Sedation is also provided to help you remain comfortable. Next, we make incisions in your gums, exposing the bone underneath. With the surgical guide and NobelGuide technology, we can see every step of your procedure. This allows us to increase the predictability of your procedure, reducing the risk of complications during and after the procedure. We can plan the optimal locations, angles, and depths of your implants. After the holes have been drilled, the implant posts are then placed, and your gums are sutured closed. If your final restorations are being immediately loaded, we secure them into place with small screws. Otherwise, temporary teeth are set in place.

Recovery After Surgery

Recovery after implant surgery can take anywhere from several weeks to several months. During this time, the bone gradually fuses to the posts, integrating them into the jaw. Over time, they become replacement roots that will then be used to securely support your new teeth. Several follow up visits will allow us to monitor your healing and ensure that your implants are integrating properly.

Placing Your Implant Restorations

If you have gone through your recovery with temporary teeth, your final restorations will be designed and placed once you have fully healed. First, we remove your temporary teeth and place the abutments or connectors. Next, we take digital impressions of your mouth. The impressions are used to custom create your new teeth. Once your teeth have been completed, we then screw them into place.

The process for getting dental implants may be more involved, but treatment provides several significant benefits. Call Richard Whipple, DDS at (503) 620-6133 today to schedule your consultation and find out if dental implants are right for you.
