All-on-4 Treatment Concept

A dental implant patient who is happy with her permanent tooth replacement prosthetic in Tigard, ORWhen you lose your teeth, several things begin to happen. Simple daily tasks, such as eating and speaking, become more of a challenge. Your once beautiful smile is significantly impacted, which can have major consequences for your confidence. Under the gum line, your jawbone begins to lose mass and weaken. When this happens, the jaw begins to change shape. The more teeth you lose, the worse the effects. Replacing missing teeth is important. Dental implants are one of the most popular options for achieving this goal, offering numerous benefits. However, to provide stable support for your replacement teeth, you need to have sufficient bone mass in your jaw. In many cases, a bone graft is necessary to restore bone mass, which aids in implant success. If you are missing a full arch of teeth, Richard Whipple, DDS can help you to avoid a bone graft with the All-on-4 treatment concept.

The Effects of Tooth Loss on Your Jawbone

Your teeth have many important functions. One function that many people are not aware of is that they stimulate your jawbone. This occurs every time you chew. The stimulation sends a message to your body that the jaw requires nutrients. The moment you lose your teeth, the stimulation weakens. This results in a weaker message, and therefore fewer nutrients are sent. Gradually, the bone begins to grow weak and resorb, altering the shape of your jaw. This is also known as bone loss

Dental Implants

Dental implants are a fairly recent treatment for replacing missing teeth. The treatment was the result of an accidental discovery in the 1950s. Dental implants use small titanium posts to support the ceramic crowns that replace your missing teeth. The posts are surgically implanted into your jawbone and are gradually integrated into it as the bone fuses to them through a process known as osseointegration. Eventually, the posts become stable roots. The crowns are secured in place to the implants with small screws.

The All-on-4 Treatment Concept Difference

When you lose an entire arch of teeth, whether, from the top or the bottom jaw, you may be a candidate for an implant supported denture. This restoration uses 6 to 8 implants to support the replacement teeth. However, if you have lost too much bone mass after tooth loss, you may not have enough left to support those necessary implants. Without sufficient bone mass, the implants may not integrate properly, leaving them loose, or they may fail altogether.

In many cases, if you want dental implants but do not have sufficient bone mass, you need to first have a bone graft. The All-on-4 treatment concept provides a way for you to receive dental implants without first undergoing this other surgery. Instead of the 6 to 8 implants typically used, this treatment uses only 4. These four implants are placed in such a way that they take advantage of the bone mass that you have left. Two are placed vertically in the front of the jaw. There is naturally more bone mass in this area of the jaw. The other two implants are placed at 45-degree angles at the back of the jaw. This angle maximizes the contact between bone and post, enabling optimal fusion.

Enjoy the Benefits of the All-on-4 Treatment Concept

With the All-on-4 treatment concept, you are provided with the same benefits as any other type of dental implant, including the stimulation of the jawbone. Other benefits of this treatment include:
•  You require less surgery.
•  Your recovery period is often shorter.
•  The need for a bone graft is avoided.
•  In the upper jaw, the angle of the implants at the back of the jaw avoid the maxillary sinus cavities, preventing the need for a sinus lift.

With the All-on-4 treatment concept, you can avoid the need for a bone graft, which helps you to avoid undergoing an invasive surgery and lengthy recovery before undergoing implant surgery.
